My Art Experience at The Painted Cork in Folsom

The Painted Cork is an incredibly fun art experience. The studio is located in historic Old Folsom, California and is the perfect setting for a casual art class.

Students are encouraged to bring their own wine, snacks, or refreshments of choice to help them relax and enjoy the two to three hour class. The cost is minimal, the subject of the art varies day-by-day, and the instructor, Kimberly Godinho, is an upbeat, down-to-earth, professional artist and educator. Best of all, NO ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

The class fee includes all materials needed to complete your take-home work of art: canvas, paints, bowls, brushes, etc. Here is what I took home at the end of my class:

Happy Holidays!

I am really in the Christmas Spirit and I wanted to take this time to thank you for visiting me on my blog throughout this past year. I appreciate your comments, helpful feedback, and company. As for now, I am excited for Christmas, spending time with family, and celebrating the Reason For the Season. My hope is that you can clear your head, enjoy your people, and find joy this season by following my 3 easy steps to a beautiful Christmas:

Surround yourself with loved ones, whether family or friends. The people who really love and appreciate you make the best party guests. Plus, it gives you a chance to show your love and appreciation to them.
Give without expecting anything in return. It is the season of giving, after all. Give to those you love, but look for ways to give to others in need, as well.
Allow yourself to relax and indulge in sweetness. Whether it is the sweetness of a child's laughter or actual sweets, soak up all the sweetness the season brings your way. It only lasts a short time.

My team, the Hula Hooters, have walked every year for the past 10 years. They are some of the most beautiful, courageous, dedicated women on the planet. Aren't they gorgeous?

Allu Ultimate Skin Therapy – A Product Review

The following is a product review for which I was compensated in product.

I have been using a Allu Ultimate Skin Therapy for about a month. Marketed as an Egyptian Secret to the Fountain of Youth, Allu includes ingredients such as Bitter Almond and Neroli oil, which can be used to improve skin elasticity and smooth wrinkles.

The Claim:
Dr. Bute's Promise: from the video on the website You'll never have to use any other skincare product because Allu will prove itself. -Dr. Bute

Allu claims it will rejuvenate, protect, and moisturize the skin, using the world's most powerful Egyptian skin therapy.

My Results:
I immediately recognized tightening of my skin after application. The product is rich, but not greasy. It seems to absorb into the skin quickly, which is great. However, I had trouble when applying my makeup on over this product, as the Allu offers no slip whatsoever.

I experienced the appearance of brighter skin, smoothing of fine lines, and noticeably firmer skin. I also really liked the soft peach fragrance.

I did experience breakouts after a few days of using this product. It may be simply due to a change in my skincare routine, which is common.

The Presentation:
The box the product comes in is shaped like the pyramids, complete with what looks like hieroglyphics on the side. The packaging is beautiful and clever, but is not very user-friendly. The product is not easily dispensed, as I had to turn the pyramid upside down and bang the product out into my palm. It is not easy to control the amount dispensed, or get product from the bottom of the bottle. I would suggest a pump or some other type of dispensing on this bottle.

Overall, I really like the product offered by Allu. I like the product as a moisturizing element to an overall skincare regimen. While it did give me some results equal to its claims, it didn't deliver a complete miracle. After using the product for a month, I still have some signs of aging. (drats.) I would also like it if Allu had an entire system, rather than just one product. I believe that the cleansing and exfoliating steps are as important as the moisturizer. Maybe those will be available in the future.

Fall-ing for Beauty - Making a Color Change

Hooray, it's Fall!

You may have guessed that I love Fall. I do. I love this season for the cozy, layered clothing styles and the gorgeous colors appearing everywhere.

Along with the changing colors of nature, it's time to think of personal color, as well. During Fall, fashion, including hair and makeup, makes its move into warmer, darker tones and colors. If you are an Autumn, then this is your season. Even if you are not an Autumn, you can take advantage of the season to add a little spice to your look. Not sure of your season? Read about it here.

Changing your haircolor and makeup can create an instant beauty boost.

If you change your haircolor, you should also consider changing your makeup, as well.

Remember that you should stick to a color palette that best compliments your skintone. For example, I am a cool palette, but I can still choose Fall colors that work with my skin. Choosing a neutral brown or green, one that is more cool than warm, can work with an autumn palette.

To add a bright accent to the darker, gloomier days of Fall, try something new, like this sparkle eye liner.

What's Your Season? - The Fall Color Palette

Is your personal color palette a Fall/Autumn?

I am often asked by clients to evaluate their personal season or color palette. Knowing your season can be helpful when choosing fashion, makeup, and haircolor.

Color Analysis is the art of determining a season or color palette. It means finding and utilizing colors which are most complimentary for each individual. (These are guidelines and not law.)

You may have been following my previous posts about personal color. In Colors and Seasons, I cover the basics of discovering your season. Then, the Spring Color Palette is a post dedicated to you Spring beauties.

Here are three easy ways to determine if you are a Fall/Autumn:

Check your skintone. Do you have a warm or golden undertone to your skin? (as opposed to a cool or pink undertone) Best place to check is on the inside of your wrist.
Do you tend to freckle? This is often associated with red in the hair and/or a warm palette.

Check your natural haircolor. Do you have natural gold, orange, or red in your hair (as opposed to ashy, drab natural haircolor)? The hair belonging to a Fall color palette will most often have warmth.

Check your eye color. Do you have dark eyes, or darker eyes with flecks of gold (vs light eyes)? Darker eyes tend to be an indicator of a Fall or Winter color palette.

Another way to find your season is to enlist the help of your salon professional. Hairstylists and makeup artists have a great eye and the knowledge to help you determine your skintone.

Incredibly Scrumptious Turkey Burgers

How often do you make a healthy food choice, only to be disappointed when it is void of flavor?

It happens to me all the time. In the quest for better well-being, healthy eating tops the list. But making better food choices should not mean bland, boring food.
It should also be easy! Finding healthy ready-to-eat food choices, however, is practically impossible. I have concluded that there is really no way around preparing your own healthy food goodness.

And so, my family is often on the receiving end of my healthy food, let's call them, culinary experiments. A few are a total bust, but most are ok. Then some are exceptionally surprising! Below is the latest healthy food goodness to come out of my kitchen. It's inexpensive, quick to prepare, and really tasty! I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

Turkey Burgers
1 lb Ground Turkey
1/2 tsp Fresh Ginger, minced (ok to use tube of fresh ginger from produce aisle)
1/2 tsp Curry Powder
1/2 tsp Garlic Salt
1/4 tsp Onion Powder
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
1/2 T Soy Sauce
1/4 c Fresh Basil (or cilantro) Leaves, chopped

Black Pepper, freshly ground (for seasoning outside of patties)

Salt (for seasoning outside of patties)

3 T Olive Oil

Mix all ingredients except salt and pepper. Split mixture into 4 patties. (makes 4-4oz patties) Sprinkle each patty with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in pan over high heat. Add patties to hot oil and turn down heat to medium. Brown each patty 4 minutes per side. Turn heat down to med-low and continue cooking until cooked thoroughly (approximately 3 more min per side), flipping once. Remove patties from pan.

These burgers are delicious alone, or you could put them on a whole wheat bun. But, I prefer to serve the burger patty over greens. If you want to try it, here is how I prepare the greens:

GREENS

1 T Olive Oil
2 Cloves Garlic, sliced thin
2 T Chicken Broth

2 T Soy Sauce

1 lb Chopped Fresh Greens (Southern Greens or Collards, prepackaged is fine)

Add Olive Oil to turkey burger pan. Add garlic and saute on medium heat for one minute, stirring continuously. (Be careful not to burn garlic to avoid a bitter taste) Remove garlic and set aside. Add chicken broth and soy sauce to pan to deglaze, scraping up the bits from the bottom. Add fresh greens for 4-7 minutes on medium heat, stirring frequently. Cover and cook until sauce turns to a glaze and greens are wilted. Add garlic back to pan and stir. Salt and pepper to taste.

Not only are these Turkey Burgers delicious, but they are very low fat and low calorie! In fact, according to The Calorie King, a single serving of these Turkey Burgers over greens is less than 400 Calories! Woot!

The Search for the Perfect Bra

It may seem like a hush-hush topic, but I feel the need to discuss the bra. Can we talk?

To me, the bra is a necessary evil. Most women wear one, and most of us wear a bra that is uncomfortable, doesn't fit properly, or requires constant attention during the day. (pulling it down in back, up in front, or repositioning slipping straps)

If any of these issues sound familiar to you, it probably means you are wearing the incorrect bra.

To me, bra shopping is like shoe shopping, only not as much fun. What I mean is, I may want the sexy shoe, but it may not be the sensible choice. Still, should I settle for the unattractive, just to get proper fit and comfort? Absolutely not. Neither should you.

A professional bra fitting is a great place to start your bra shopping experience. Knowing your correct size will make it easier for you to find a better fitting bra. Not only will the correct bra help your posture and comfort level, but it will boost your self-confidence, as well.

It also helps to know what you want your bra to do for you. Personal preference plays a role in the final purchase decision. Underwire vs no underwire, strapless, full-figure support, push-up, minimize...so many preferences to choose. Remember the old commercials, when all we wanted was to "lift and separate?" Now we have more choices, which is good.

The problem is that every bra fits differently, even when choosing the same preferences and size. Did you know the same bra in the same size but a different color may fit you differently? What's that, you say? Yes, I was recently enlightened to this fact. Always try on every bra.

Chlorine Green - How Swimmers Can Protect Their Hair

There is nothing more refreshing on a hot Summer day then jumping into a cool, refreshing swimming pool.

Swimmers, BEWARE! The swimming pool can also be harmful to the health of your hair and the life of your haircolor.

Harsh chemicals in the pool water, such as chlorine, can take their toll on the skin and hair and often lead to what many know as Chlorine Green. (Poor Chlorine gets a bad rap here-Actually, it is a combination of things, including the oxidation of metals, such as copper in the water, which can cause lighter hair to turn a greenish tint.) And lighter hair is not the only victim - even if the negative effects are not as visible, they are still there. Often the chemicals in a pool are very drying and can break down the strength of all hair and fade color, as well.

But don't give up the pool just yet. Apply these 3 tips to help minimize the negative effects of pool water on your hair and maximize your Summer fun!

1. Fill Your Hair With Tap Water First
Before jumping in, head to the shower or even the garden hose, and fill your hair with plain water. Just like a sponge, once the hair is full of water, it can't absorb any more. This will keep the pool water from absorbing for a little while.

2. Pull the Hair Up and Back
After filling the hair with plain water, braid your hair or wrap it up as tight as possible. Use multiple ponytails or a bun. The idea here is to make it harder for the pool water to penetrate. Of course, the ever-fashionable swimming cap would be best here, but you may not have one handy.

3. Chelate After Every Swim
Using a shampoo which is made to remove chlorine, chemicals, and metals from the hair is important to help eliminate the greenish tint and also keep hair soft and healthy! Remember also to add a deep conditioner to replace protein and nutrients that may have been lost to the chemicals. (I recommend Redken's Color Extend Sun After-Sun Mask.)

What's Your Season? The Summer Color Palette

What does it mean to be a Summer?

Well, when we are speaking of fashion or makeup, a Summer is someone who looks great in cool, bright colors, such as pinks, blues, and greens. Fuchsia and purple are also popular Summer colors. A personal color analysis will help you determine your color season.

How do you know if the Summer season color palette is right for you?

First, determine whether your skintone is cool or warm. The best way to do this is to look at the under side of your wrist and forearm. Do you see a pinkish (cool) tone or a yellow (warm) one?

• Cool Undertones = Summer or Winter Palettes

• Warm Undertones = Spring or Autumn Palettes

Next, think about the difference between colors such as pink and peach. One is cool and the other warm. They seem similar, however, if you put pink against a warm skintone, it may not compliment the skin like the peach color would. Try this with mint green and lime green. One is cool and one is warm.

Once you have determined that your skintone is cool, you can now determine whether you are a Summer or Winter. Do you have light eyes or dark eyes? Light hair or dark?

• Autumn and Winter = Dark Hair and Dark Eyes

• Summer and Spring = Lighter Hair and Lighter Eyes

Finally, what colors do you wear that make you feel energetic, confident, and happy? Chances are those colors are included in your color palette. Of course, there are always what I call, Crossover colors. These are colors that might not necessarily be in your personal palette, but still look great with your skintone and haircolor. It's not breaking the rules to wear or use Crossover colors, it is simply adding more choices.

Particularly if you are in for a long flight or car drive, it is important for you to plan for every eventuality concerning your makeup and hairdo. Five simple tips to beauty on-the-go can help you look fresh en route to your destination and during the length of your stay.

Always Moisturize

Moisturizing is a key factor in any makeup regimen, but it is especially important during travel to destinations with unfamiliar climates. The night before travel and the morning of the trip, make sure to pamper your skin with a little moisturizer to prevent skin dehydration. This ensures that you look bright-eyed and bushy tailed when you arrive at your destination. Make sure to also apply lotion throughout your trip. If you are driving and your hands and arms are exposed to direct sunlight, lotion and sunscreen will be your best friends.

Go Naked

Before embarking on a plane, bus, or car ride, try not to slather on heavy makeup. Caked-on makeup can be uncomfortable during long trips, so try to avoid foundation if you can. If you must wear foundation, stick with something light and always apply primer first to avoid skin dehydration.

The same applies to lipstick, especially if you are traveling by plane when cabin pressure can dehydrate the color and your mouth. Instead of heavy lipstick, try a lightweight lip stain and freshen with gloss. This keeps you looking fresh without weighing down your face.

Shine with Shimmer

Adding a bit of loose powder shimmer during a trip can help you look fresh, even if you are suffering from jet lag. Dip your finger into the powder, sprinkling small amounts on the apples of your cheeks, your nose, and your lips. This gives the illusion that you have just applied your make up, giving you a clean look.

Mind Your Hair

Long trips can ruin a hairdo. Many people let their hair hang free during trips, but stepping out of a plane, bus, or car with not-so-lustrous locks can make the rest of you look messy. Consider putting your hair up in a pony tail before departure. Bring your favorite brush if you can in case of unruly hair regardless of preparation. A hat is also a good idea in a pinch.

Pack Lightly

If you are traveling by bus or plane, you may not have the luxury of taking all your beauty products with you. Instead, choose which ones you cannot live without and pack accordingly. Moisturizer, hand lotion, sunscreen, and lip stains are absolute musts and should be carried on if possible. Take only the eye shadows, blushes, lipsticks, and foundations that you use regularly and leave the rest at home. Packing lightly is a key element in a successful trip.

We are busy. We are thinking about the next task. We are too busy looking at our smart phones, computer screens, or bleary-eyed from the like.

Have we lost our ability to connect in the simplest way? Are we missing the beauty in the world around us?

Give the next person you meet, face-to-face, a good, long look. Right in the eyes. Just stare at them. And smile while you do it. Make incredible eye contact that lasts for more than a second. Make it 5 seconds. Or 10 seconds. Go ahead. It won't hurt.

3 Tips To Keep Your Hair Style Looking Fabulous All The Time

Have you heard the saying, consistency is key?

This is true even for hair. Who doesn't want consistently fabulous hair?

Once you achieve a look you love, you can keep that look by being consistent with its care. Yes, you have to plan for great hair. And if you stick to the plan, you will love your hair all the time!

Here are some simple tips to help you keep your look fresh and fabulous:

Visit the same stylist every time. Once you find a Keeper, stick with him/her. The key to consistent cuts is to see the same stylist. Let them get to know your hair and your habits. When a stylist knows you, your hair type, and your haircare regimen, it is easier to create a look that will fit you perfectly.
Color touch-ups matter. To maintain consistent color, touch-up whenever your regrowth (roots) is 1/2 an inch. If you wait much longer, color will be harder to match. (We will discuss this in more depth in another post.) Along with you planning touch-ups in a timely manner, your stylist plays an important role in consistent color. Does your stylist write down your formula for color? It's OK to ask your stylist what they are doing to your hair. It's YOUR hair, after all. You may not understand the chemistry behind the color, but at least you let your stylist know you are paying attention. Hold them accountable for consistency.
Book your next hair appointment before you leave your salon. Do not postpone making your next appointment. Keep yourself accountable by pre-booking your future visits. This will also help keep you from trimming your own bangs (or worse) out of desperation. Ask your stylist when it would be best to return. To maintain your gorgeous look, stick to the schedule.

As you can see, keeping the look you love takes a little planning, but it is not difficult. Follow these 3 tips to help ensure your hair style stays fabulous all the time!

How Smoking Adversely Effects Your Looks

Do you smoke?

If you do, I am sure you have heard the health warnings. Well, aside from cancer, lung disease, and other well-known health risks, smoking can also wreak havoc on your looks.

Here are a few ways smoking adversely effects your looks:

Free radicals are present in the system of a smoker, causing more rapid aging and resulting in lack of oxygen and nutrients. Your skin and hair need oxygen and nutrients to retain their glow.
Smokers are more susceptible to wrinkles than non-smokers. These wrinkles are especially prominent around a smoker's mouth and eyes.
Smoking decreases Vitamin C levels, which is a natural antioxidant and helps collagen production. Collagen is essential for healthy, firm, resilient, youthful skin.
Hair becomes thinner, finer, more brittle, dull, lackluster, and dry. Many of my clients who stopped smoking, noticed their hair and skin dramatically changed for the better. Instead of dull, dry, and lifeless, their hair and skin became soft, shiny, and bright! Even the texture changed drastically. It also improved their haircolor results.
Yellow teeth, bad breath, and change in voice are all obvious and common effects of smoking. And these are all really, really counter-productive in our quest for beauty.

So, do you still smoke? Quitting is difficult. There are chemical, as well as physiological forces to contend with in the process. However, knowing how smoking effects your looks may make it a bit easier. Quitting may actually extend your life and benefit your looks in the process!

High School Prom Updos and Hairstyles

Do you remember your prom? Remember planning what to wear, where to have dinner, and how to wear your hair?

I have vague (cough, cough) memories of mine. Picture the lavender taffeta tea-length dress, complete with hoop skirt and dyed-to-match lavender pumps. I was a walking fashion statement. ( I promise to look for a picture to post at a later date. wink. wink.)

After planning for my dress, shoes, and yes, even lavender fingernails, I didn't leave much time to plan my hair. I remember having my hair done up, but those pinned-up curls came down before pictures were even taken.

It's a good thing girls today are much more fashion conscious and generally much better at planning ahead for these events.

This past Saturday, a local High School Prom was held. I had the pleasure of helping some young girls get ready for their special night. Bobby Pins flew and hairspray was wafting through the air.

The following pictures are from the Updo-Fest that happened at Hair Galleria this past weekend. Lots of waves and loose curls were inspired by an early 20th century theme, with additional inspiration from a few celebrities.

The young ladies all looked fabulous and I would like to thank them for posing for these shots taken with my iPhone camera. I admit, these images could have better portrayed the hair design work, but really, who has time for a real photo shoot when the limo is waiting?

Have you ever gone on a low fat diet?

Although eliminating most fats from your diet could lead to better health, it could also cause your skin to become dull, dry, and downright flaky.

If that doesn't sound like the look you are going for, read on, my friend. The following is a small list of fats we want to keep in our diets in moderation (for our skin's sake) and those we should eliminate.

Remember, eliminating all fats from your diet could dry out your skin and lead to a dull appearance. And I know you prefer to glow, am I right? Stick to the good fats, in moderation, to achieve better health and keep your beautiful skin glowing!

The beauty industry has so many career choices, including becoming a beauty school instructor. Instructors have the power to inspire and influence beauty school students in a positive way, leading to successful careers in the beauty industry. The beauty school instructor plays a very important role in the future of the industry.

The following is an interview with Beauty School Instructor, Josephine Pizzaro.

Why are you an instructor in a beauty school?
To give back to the industry that gave so much. I was also after many years of behind the chair looking for a new challenge and teaching provides this for me without changing industries.

Do you work in a salon, as well?
No but that is just a preference of mine. Schools (good Schools) provide continuing education for their instructors. I am and will always be first and foremost a Licensed Stylist so I keep up on trends and new techniques myself.

How long does beauty school take?
It depends on your state requirements any where form 1000 hrs to 2400 hrs.

How much money can I make as a hairstylist?
Geographic’s play a lot into this; I would suggest looking at your state labor statistics or the leading Accrediting entity NACCAS (www.naccas.org) they have an extensive study on their site.

As an instructor?
Same as above.

What makes your school better than another, like a Paul Mitchell or a Vidal Sasoon?
Long Island Beauty Schools and Hair Design Institutes are not married to any one discipline or product line. Our students learn multiple of both and for that reason we feel our students get true exposure and real life experiences without an agenda of selling a particular product line. Kiss Lipstick Feathering Goodbye

Here are a few tips to help keep your lipstick from feathering:

Exfoliate Your Lips. Yes, even your lips need exfoliating. Removing the dead skin cells on and around your lips daily will make them more receptive to moisture, the fine lines will become more refined, and the result will be a smoother lip color application.
Condition Your Lips*. When applying your daily moisturizer, make sure to include your lips. Try a great lip conditioner to smooth out that pout, such as Dermalogica's age defying Lip Renewal Complex.
Use a Lipliner. Using a lipliner to outline the lips prior to applying lip color seems to help keep my lipstick intact. To avoid that drawn-on look, use a clear or nude shade for lip liner. Try Aveda's Nourish-Mint(tm) Lip Definer. Another option is to use that liner all over your lips and top with a gloss for added sparkle.

*Remember: If you condition right before applying your lip color, dust your face powder over your lips. This will help give that lip color added staying power.

How to Choose the Perfect Hairstyle

So, you are ready for a new style. You visit your favorite salon and while in the waiting room, you peruse the vast selection of magazines and hair style books, hoping to discover the style you've been waiting for.

Now you are in your stylist's chair. You show your stylist the picture. You say, "This is it! I want to look like this!"

Then, you experience utter disappointment when your stylist tells you that you cannot have that style. She says you won't look like that. She explains that your hair texture is wrong for that cut, your face shape won't look right with that style, or she points out that you don't like to style your hair and the style you picked out is all about the styling.

What do you do now?

In a previous post about the Perfect Face Shape, I offered suggestions on how to style your hair to give you the perfect oval shape. So how do you pick that perfect style for you and your unique hair qualities? Use these 4 simple steps to help you decide:

Find a picture of a style you love. Now, take your finger and cover the face of the lovely hair model in the picture. Yes, you read that right. Cover her face. You are not that model. You are so much prettier! So, it makes sense to cover her face, since you won't look like her at all after the haircut. Just look at the cut and ask yourself, "Self, do I still like this style?"
Have a professional consultation. Sure, you can show the picture to your friends and family to gather their opinions. However, it is best to seek professional advice from the stylist you love and trust with your looks. Your stylist can guide you through the next few steps.
Decide your face shape. Choose from Square, Round, Oval, Oblong, Square, Triangle, Diamond, or Heart-shaped. If you and your stylist decide that you have an oval face shape, you are golden. What that means is that you already have the desired face shape, so you can choose just about any style you like. Lucky you! If you have one of the other face shapes, make sure to consult your stylist on designing the new style to give you the illusion of an oval shape. Talk finish styling with your stylist. Is the style you chose low maintenance? Do you need to spend 5 minutes styling it? Or 10 minutes? Or even 20 minutes? If so, are you willing to put the effort into your new style? Will you need to purchase new hot tools in order to recreate what your stylist does in the salon? Would this style benefit from some creative color to make it really pop? All good questions to discuss with your stylist.

With the tips above, you are well on your way to choosing your perfect style. Now grab some magazines and start perusing. Don't forget to take before and after pictures.

The Shag was a very popular hairstyle from the 70s. Both guys and gals alike wanted those layers. Remember that dream-boat, Keith Partridge? He wore the Shag very well on his straight hair. Farrah also had a Shag style, but she had those great waves in her hair. There are lots of examples of Shags on the web.

There are differences of opinions on what makes a Shag a Shag. Also called the Gypsy cut, the Shag is a style where the hair is heavily layered, with the shortest layers near the crown, graduating to longer layers toward the bottom.

Although todays styles lean towards longer softer finish, the Shag is very relevant for today. Here are 3 reasons to consider layering your hair in the Shag style:

1. Layers lighten the weight of the hair
Anytime layers are created in the hair, the hair becomes naturally lighter. Even fine haired clients can benefit from a shag style, as long as the stylist takes care to add layers that create volume instead of a thinner look.

2. Layers give the hair movement
For many, there is wave underneath all that hair. Layers are a way to release all that wave, or even curl, and make the hair dance. (and who doesn't want dancing hair?) Even straight hair will benefit from layers, if styled correctly. (with a round brush, curling iron, or other hot tools) If you are someone with straight hair who just can't spend the extra time on your hair, you may want to reconsider excessive layers. Consult your stylist to help you decide what is best for your hair type.

3. Layers give you more options for styling
Whether wearing your hair up or down, adding layers will allow you to create different looks from the same style. Straighten or flat iron the hair forward for a piecey, separated look. Curl the hair and the new layers add tons of volume to your look. If you are the type who just pulls the hair back every day, your new layers will create a cascade effect.

What is the difference between a Client and a Customer?

Let me give you a couple of definitions:

From Merriam-Webster online

Client
a person who engages the professional advice or services of another

Customer
one that purchases a commodity or service

According to Merriam-Webster, those who seek a salon professional for their beauty services and advice clearly fall under the definition of Client. They are not simply purchasing goods, they are receiving personal service from a professional.

My Clients are more than just Customers.

They Seek Professional Advice
They Want Personal Service
They Expect That I Know My Business
They Trust Me With Their Looks
They Feel Better After a Visit

I believe it is all about relationships. My Clients come to me seeking a personal, hands-on beauty treatment or service, from an industry professional. They want to know that I have vast knowledge in my field and they trust me to help them get the look they want. That is not something they can get anywhere from just anybody. They want to build a lasting Client/Stylist relationship. (Honestly, nobody wants to jump from stylist to stylist. That's like seeing a new dentist every time you need dental work. It's scary and uncomfortable.) And truth be told, many Client/Stylist relationships usually become true friendships over time.

I am blessed to work in such a great industry, where I get to help my Clients look and feel their best on a very personal level. Think about this: How does a bad hair day make you feel? And how much better do you feel about yourself after a visit to the salon? I am blessed to be able to help others in this way.

Although you may walk through any salon doors for the first time as a Customer, hopefully you will leave as a Client. Hopefully, you will have been engaged by a salon professional who gave you great advice, helped you with your specific beauty needs, and built your confidence enough to warrant a future Client/Stylist relationship.

My Clients are more than just customers. I have a relationship with them and they trust me. They feel good after a visit to the salon and I feel good having helped them with their beauty needs.

Why Home Haircolor is Not the Best Idea

This morning I saw a video clip on a local newscast highlighting the great strides in home haircolor. The piece intended to persuade viewers that purchasing and using these over-the-counter haircolors is now easier than ever before.

Let me just say, UGH!

I am glad I got that off my chest. Some may not understand my frustration, but if you are a client of mine, you know how I feel about over-the-counter haircolor. I've written about Hair Color Disasters in the past. Advertisers often embellish the truth. Applying haircolor is not as easy as it looks.

There is so much to know prior to coloring hair. Hairstylists go to beauty school to learn the chemistry and application techniques necessary for successful color application. We learn what happens when color overlaps color and how ammonia affects the hair. We learn what colors appear in the hair as hair lightens. We learn that not all hair can be a beautiful platinum blonde. (not healthy blonde, anyway) We actually learn a whole lot more. Take a look at this list of terms below. Are they familiar to you?

Developer
Peroxide
Base Color
Level Systems
Undertones
Bands
Ammonia

If any of these terms seems unfamiliar to you, you may want to find out what they mean before attempting to color your own hair. If you hate brassy hair, you may not want to apply your own color. Creating unwanted orange in the hair is one of the most common mistakes.

Just because home haircolor companies have changed the formula and made application easier, doesn't mean the laws of color have changed. Brass still happens. Breakage happens, too.

My advice is that applying your own color at home is not a good idea. There are just too many variables. When you color your hair, you are dealing with a chemical, after all. Why take unnecessary risks? Sometimes what we don't know can actually hurt us.

My experience with Kohana Skin began a month or so ago. I say experience, because for me, using these products is more than just simple application - it is truly an experience.

Kohana Skin is a natural skincare line inspired by the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. The lush bath and body products go way beyond the basic scrub and moisturizer. I used the bath salts, sugar scrubs, and cremes on myself and my clients. The bath salts are an excellent foot soak for pedicures, while the sugar scrubs are gentle exfoliants - really nice for manicures, as well as pedicures.

The result: Baby-soft, smooth, and glowing skin. Needless to say, the clients enjoyed the fragrant, spa-like experience and the end result!

My favorites in the line include the

Coffee Body Butter Creme.
The Coffee products smell as good as they sound, just like my favorite morning brew! Yum. Coffee lovers rejoice!

My overall opinion

The packaging is bright and clean. My samples came in a finely hand woven natural fiber basket - a great presentation. These products would be well-received as gifts.

Why Your Moisturizer May Not Be Effective

Do you spend time each day applying moisturizer to your skin, only to feel like you are still dry?

Applying moisture to the surface of the skin is only half the battle. You also need to prepare the skin to receive that moisture. This rule applies to both the face and the body.

"Well, how do I do that?," you ask?

The answer is simple: Exfoliate.

Dry, dull, dead skin cells sit on the top layer of your skin until you slough them off. If you moisturize without exfoliating, it is sort of like watering a shriveled-up, dried-out plant...pretty pointless. Eventually, that dull skin will leave you, on it's own, and take that moisture with it.

However, if you remove that layer of dulling debris with an exfoliant prior to moisturizing, your skin will be more receptive. It will gladly drink in the moisture, thus softening, smoothing, and nourishing the skin effectively.

There are daily exfoliants that are gentle, yet effective on most skin types. One of my favorites for the face, neck, and decollate (chest) is Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant.

The reasons I like Daily Microfiliant: It prepares my skin to receive moisture and it leaves my skin instantly smoother and brighter, too!

I Just Couldn't Wait – For Spring

Ok, I know it's only been hours since Punxsutawney Phil gave us all the good news. We won't have to wait through 6 more weeks of Winter for Spring to arrive. Yay.

With that news, I just couldn't wait to share my new Spring Blog Design with you. Isn't it cheery?

For me, Spring can come as early as it wants to. Spring is my favorite season. And it's not for any of the reasons you may think. Not the fresh air, or the budding flowers, or even the romance. (although those are all Beautiful reasons to love Spring)

It's Baseball.

Have you ever worn a wig or a hairpiece?

I had never worn one, until recently when my Glamarama hairpiece from the Dancing with the Stars Collection arrived on my doorstep. Thank you, Wig.com!

This hairpiece is so fun!

Wig.com calls it a flirty ponytail style hairpiece with a hinged comb clip attachment. It is heat-friendly (recommended to use medium heat) synthetic fiber, but it looks and feels like real hair!

This hairpiece makes it easy to create fast, fun, beautiful styles. I was able to recreate updo's and chignons suggested by the pros at Wig.com. The clip holds well, even in my thick hair.

Don't know if you can acheive the look? It is so easy. Honest. If you can pull your hair back in a ponytail, you can clip on the Glamarama for an instant style!

I was especially excited that the Glamarama I received matched the color of my hair almost exactly. It is really nice that there are so many color choices. There are 12 different hair color options! And the folks at wig.com are courteous and super helpful if you need assistance.

I have been using Belegenza haircare products on myself and my clients for several weeks. The following is my review of the product line.

Belegenza is:

Healthy beauty products for everyone. The product line includes haircare, styling products, and skincare. They strive to create Natural products with no side effects that are safe for the health and well-being of humans and the planet.

I used IlLustrous Shampoo & Cleanser and RoMANce Deep Conditioner.

What Belegenza Claims:

Sulfate & salt-free, color safe shampoo
Removes buildup and sulfates
Luxurious lather cleanses deeply and gently
Concentrated with vitamins, anti-oxidants, and anti-aging secrets
Adds shine
Extends color life
Prevents split ends
Encourages faster hair growth

What Belegenza Does:

I did not notice any color fading with the shampoo
The hair felt clean and free of buildup
The lather was NOT luxurious, even with several shampoos
Adds shine
Did not notice less split ends or faster growth

As for the styling product, I used PerForm.

From the website: PerForm is lightweight, controls frizz, locks out humidity, adds shine, eliminates flyaways, seals in moisture to hair and scalp while protecting hair from heat damage.

After using PerForm, my hair was frizzy and very flyaway when left in a curly style. Once I blowdried my hair straight, it was very shiny and sleek. It held the style for an adequate time.

My Overall Opinion:

I love the concept of sulfate-free, as most clients are conscious of the ingredients. I like the pleasant fragrance of the products. I was concerned about the lack of lather with the Shampoo/Cleanser, but after reading the directions, first time users should use the product 2 or 3 times before they expect to see the luxurious lather.

The in-salon clients I tried the product on seemed happy with their finished style and commented on the pleasant fragrance, as well. Since most of my clients use a lot of styling products, they may need to repeat that ritual of 2 or 3 shampoos each time, which would mean the product wouldn't last long, making the product very expensive.

However, for those who are health conscious and want earth-friendly products, it is worth looking into Belegenza products. There are many products in the line I did not have a chance to review, such as the products for thinning hair and the silicone-free shine. I am also now curious about the skincare line and may want to order some to try.

A Beautiful Inspiration Day!

Yesterday, the family went to the coast...yay!
You all know how I feel about the ocean. And if you don't, well let's just say, I think it Rocks! (no pun intended)

We headed to Maverick's because I heard the waves were ridiculously huge. I was not disappointed at all that it was completely blown out and there was no surf contest. It was still fantastic. And inspirational.

I always meet God at the ocean. He's always there. After all, he created that powerful, majestic ocean that soothes my soul. I got a healthy dose of Spiritual inspiration. And salt air.

We stopped by Oceano, a quaint little place, where we had a wonderful lunch, and I was inspired, yet again. Planes were landing at the small strip nearby, which made me want to go rent a plane and fly, just so I could land there. There were several artists painting the local scenery around the harbor. They made me want to come home and dig out my brushes and paint something. I haven't done that in a while.

Cane + Austin Product Review

I have been using the Cane + Austin Retexturizing Treatment Pads for a little over a month now and here is what I have discovered.

Cane + Austin is:

Cane + Austin is the formulation of Dr Craig Austin, MD, Dermatology NY.
Dr. Austin is a Professor of Dermatology and Dermatopathology at two major dermatology programs in New York City.

His goal is to bring the great results of Glycolic peels, which were expensive, to the home user at a less expensive price.

He chose pure, natural, active and safe pharmaceutical grade ingredients, and set out to make the product great for both men and women. (Cane + Austin uses Pure Sugar Cane)

There are two types of treatment pads:

Retexturizing Treatment Pads

Acne Treatment Pads

I used mainly the Retexturizing Treatment Pads, as I have aging skin and only have sporatic breakouts. The directions say only to use them twice a day, followed by moisturizer, so I used the pads daily, in place of the exfoliator in my regular skincare routine.

I used the Acne Treatment Pads to spot treat my occasional breakouts with great results.

What Cane + Austin Claims:

Comparable to a Glycolic treatment in a doctor's office
With daily use at home, these pads are MORE effective and have less side effects than a single deeper chemical peel.
Simple and effective

My overall opinion is that this product is great for aging and problematic skin. It really clarifies the skin tone and smooths the surface. It brightens and gives the skin a healthy glow. (I really noticed my skin brighten and even out in color.) The pads are a little drying to the skin, but using the right moisturizer helped balance the skin and eliminate that dryness. I experienced some stinging upon application. It was worse at first, but I became less sensitive the longer I used the product. The pads were easy to use. I simply swiped my face with the pad and followed with a moisturizer.

My concern is that the directions are so minimal. I was confused at first, because I wasn't sure whether to cleanse first? Do I need to cleanse? Still not sure. If I wasn't a salon professional, would I know what to do here? In my opinion, there are so many questions to ask before using a product of this strength. For instance, is the user currently using any other acne regimen or taking oral medication? What exfoliators is the user currently using? Have they had in office treatments such as Glycolic Peels or Microdermabrasion recently? Also, for those new to skincare, knowing which moisturizer to use is important. I understand that this product is for sale to the public, in places other than salons and spas. In the salon, my first concern is always the best result for my client. Delivering what is best for each individual generally requires a consultation. I am surprised that the directions aren't more clear, or that the product isn't incorporated into a complete skin care routine. Or is this product a complete routine?

Know the Facts Behind Laser Hair Removal

Pulsed light lasers are one of the newer forms of laser technology believed to give better, longer-lasting results. These lasers require no anesthetics and are used for light-colored skin and darker hair. It works by flashing a light onto the hair, which is absorbed by the follicle and heated, permanently killing the hair follicle.

Nd:Yag (Neodymium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet Laser) is also new to laser hair removal. It has a longer wavelength compared to its predecessors, which allows for less energy to be absorbed into the skin. This means it is safer to use on darker skin types. It can also reach deeper layers of skin so it may work on those who have tanned skin as well.

Diode lasers use longer wavelengths to reach deeper layers of skin. Though it works on darker skin types, the results aren’t as strong as the Nd: Yag laser. However, this laser works best on dark, coarse hair in larger amounts, such as the back.

Alexandrite lasers work best on light-skinned, dark haired patients, making it one of the most versatile laser treatments available. Another bonus, the laser works quickly, covering a large body area with ease.

Ruby lasers have been used for laser hair removal the longest, remaining one of the most reliable laser treatments to date. This shorter wavelength laser uses more energy than long wavelength lasers making it more ideal for light-colored skin and dark hair.

So before you consider laser hair removal, ask some questions first. Get the most out of your session by choosing the best type of laser for your skin. If you have light-colored skin, you may see the best results, but for darker complexions seek out the stronger, longer wavelength laser treatments.

It is widely believed that a person can gain from 5 to 10 pounds during the holidays. Although you might feel like you fall into this category, it's nice to know that number is probably exaggerated.

Still, there are a lot of extra goodies lying around the house during the holidays. You can save those goodies for your guests, or you can eat them yourself – in moderation, of course.

Don't be discouraged with holiday eats, as many of your favorites actually have beneficial and beautificial qualities. The following is a list of 5 Holiday Foods that are actually GOOD for YOU!

Sweet Potatoes – Maybe not the casserole with the marshmallows on top, but the sweet potato is full of nutrients and vitamins. Low in calories and high in fiber, the sweet potato has been called the Most Nutritious Food.
Walnuts – There always seems to be a bowl of unshelled walnuts nearby during the holidays. Well, that nutty wonder is high in antioxidants, protein, fiber, magnesium, and phosphorous. The walnut is also high in Omega 3s, which help keep hair and skin supple and beautiful, not to mention that your body needs those essential fatty acids.

3 Good Summer Beauty Habits to Keep All Year

It's time to put away the beach towels, the hats, and the sunscreen. Or is it?

Just because the weather is beginning to cool, doesn't mean we should do away with everything we used in the Summer months. Many of the habits we practice during the warmer months are important to keep up as the season's change.

The following is a short list of good habits to keep, even when the weather cools down.

1. Moisturize
During the Fall and Winter months, the heater is usually on inside, causing skin, hair, and even eyes to dry out and become depleted of moisture. Remember to add moisture to keep all your parts and pieces soft, supple, and glowing!

Use the proper moisturizer on your hair, according to your salon professional's advice.
Use a daily skin moisturizer, to keep skin from drying and even cracking from the harsh winter weather and changing conditions inside and outside. Choose a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or greater for added protection.
Use a lubricating eye drop to keep your eyes clear and sparkling. Dry eyes can become irritated and also scratch more easily.

2. Use Sunblock
But there's no sun. Why do I need Sunblock?
I realize that we can't all live in California, where the sun shines mostly everyday of the year. But even where the sunshine is less shiny, sunblock is your friend. Don't be fooled by overcast or cloudy weather. Yes, you can get sunburned on cloudy or overcast days!
You should choose sunblock over sunscreen, as it offers better protection from the sun's harsh rays. And make sure to choose makeup with an added sun protection factor of a least 15 SPF to maximize your protection!

3. Drink Plenty of Water
When the weather is warm, you perspire, you get thirsty, and you drink plenty of water.
Do you think about drinking water in the cool weather? Not as often. It is important for your beauty, as well as your health, to maintain your daily intake of H2O.

Remember that your body is made up mostly of water. Your organs, including your skin (the body's largest organ) need lots of water to function properly and remain healthy. Staying hydrated should be a year-round endeavor. The up-side – hydrated skin tends to have less blemishes and shows fewer fine lines.

How you can get runway ready

Let’s face it. We can’t always look like we’re straight off the Marchesa runway. With our 40-plus hour work weeks, the kids’ soccer practice, and finding time for ourselves, there’s absolutely no time left over to work on styling our hair for hours a day.

After lusting after runway hair this week, EndlessBeauty.com sat down with hair extraordinaire (and award-winning stylist) Lecia Harkins, of Russ & Co. Hair Salon to find out how to get runway ready ourselves. Why DO models have such great hair, what goes on behind the scenes, and how we can take those styles and make them our own every day style? With over 20 years of hair and makeup experience, rest assured her advice is golden.

Why A Model’s Hair Looks So Great

You’re probably thinking models have perfectly clean tresses as they walk the runway in designer clothing. That’s not exactly the case. Lecia gave us some great insider tips for prepping our hair for the runway.

Day-old Hair. Lecia told us that having ‘day-old’ hair is always a must. The right amount of dirty makes the hair easier to style. If your hair is too clean, it runs the risk of not being able to hold curls, or any other style you’re attempting.

Dry Hair. In order to start any kind of styling, your hair must be thoroughly dry. Wet, and even damp, hair won’t style.

Lots of Product. Lecia advised us that the more product you use in your hair, the better. A working spray should be used for every section before styling it. Once it’s styled, Lecia recommends using a firm-hold hair spray to lock in your look.

Behind the Scenes

One can assume that behind the scenes at Fashion Week is mayhem. And you would be right. Lecia is no stranger to runway shows, often doing three different hair styles on one model between different clothing changes.

Lecia told us that it’s always important to honor the certain look each designer wants to achieve. In some cases, they want the hairstyle to complement and be a piece of the outfit, and in other cases, they want the head and face to disappear, so only the outfit is obvious to the audience.

In cases of couture shows where the clothing is elaborate, Lecia says, “more than likely the hair is going to look like a piece of art,” just like the clothing lines do. The hair styles are usually amped up with volume, and often, the same geometric shape as the dress. Lecia also points out that THIS KIND OF hair should have “absolutely zero mobility. My models can jump in the lake and water ski and come out looking untouched.”

Not looiking for hair hair art? You may want to mimic more of the style at shows like bridal shows, where Lecia tells us they’re all about “soft, romantic hair. Curlers go back after each walk and the curls are re-pinned to make sure they maintain the curl.”

Everyday Model Hair Styles

According to Lecia, the top three hair styles she frequently sees at shows are totally wearable by non-models, without a team of stylists. Here are her top three runway hair looks:

Don't Panic. It's Only Your Hair Fall-ing Out!

I know it's Fall. I can tell by the changing color of the leaves, the cool chill in the air, the pumpkin patches popping up around every corner.

But the real give-away for me is that I start to shed my Summer coat. (That would be my hair)

This morning, I washed my hair and there it was. A sort of frightening sight if I hadn't known why it happened. My hair had come out in a bunch. More than usual. I reached down and pulled Cousin IT out of the drain cover. (Some call it a hair trap, but whatever you call it, you gotta have one.)

Has this ever happened to you? Did you sort of panic and then reach up to make sure you still had some hair left on your head?

Me too.

Let me put your mind at ease. Hair cycles. In a previous post I discussed the theory that hair grows faster in the Summer months. It usually grows thicker, as well. It's all about how hair cycles.

When hair cycles, it falls out. Period. Sometimes you notice, sometimes you don't. Often we only notice our hair coming out when we do something to manipulate it, like brush it or wash it.

But here is a quick reassurance that it will be OK. Before that hair falls out, it has already replaced itself. See, no cause for alarm. If you have recently had that Cousin IT-in-the-drain experience, you have witnessed this firsthand. It's fine.

The only time you should worry is if you discover small patches of actual baldness on your scalp. In that instance, you need to consult a physician.

Hair will cycle. And it stands to reason that if we grow more hair in the Summer (my theory, but an educated theory), we might have more to shed when the seasons change.

When did you last take time to experience the charm outside your front door?

I took time out yesterday to relax, get some fresh air, and enjoy my surroundings. I really just needed to recharge my creative battery.

It was a beautiful day. So beautiful, in fact, that before I knew it, I had walked 20 blocks. I was captivated by the interesting architecture, the rustling trees, and the quiet hustle of the metropolis that is California's Capital. I was inspired.

Luckily, I had my camera with me and captured these shots to share with you.

Having the chance to really enjoy my surroundings helped remind me that BEAUTY is everywhere. If you look for it, you will find it! And it should be shared. Not everyone will appreciate what I found to be beautiful, but someone will. And to me, that makes it worth sharing.

I Want to DYE...

When I was younger, I worked in a restaurant. I was told never use the word RAG within ear-shot of any customers. Instead, I was instructed to use the term TOWEL, as it was much more appropriate.

There are also a few terms that seem negative, derogatory, or just plain inappropriate when used in a salon setting. After all, the salon is all about beauty and niceties, right?

Here are a few terms you may have heard and their more acceptable alternatives:

• Some clients want to DYE their hair. That sounds so

final. And morbid.

Acceptable term: TINT or COLOR

• Some manicurists PAINT nails. Paint a house or a

watercolor, not fingernails.

Acceptable term: POLISH

• Some stylists CUT your hair. Seems painful and dangerous.
Acceptable term: SHAPE

What’s the deal with guys who like long hair?

It's daddys who want their little girl to have long hair. It's boyfriends or husbands who have voiced their appreciation for the longer locks.

Have you casually mentioned to your man that you were going to your hair appointment, only to have him remind you not to cut it too short?

This is not unusual.

I often have husbands or boyfriends hover around my chair while I cut the hair of their child or significant other. But WHY is he hovering? It makes the client nervous. Heck, it ruffles my feathers a bit, too.

Is he trying to intimidate me? What if I make a wrong move. Will he know?

What will he do? Will he reach out and stop me if I go too far?

Just what is this guy thinking?!

Here is what I ask my clients:

How often does he run his hands through your hair?

Rarely if ever, you say?

Does he wash, blowdry, and style your hair for you?

No?

Then what’s his deal?

What is this Long Hair partiality? Many have pondered this question. Some have even written about it. Read this example. I am not sure if I agree with the guy who wrote that article. Maybe you do.
